“OUT OF BOUNDS” IS A PROCESS WORKSHOP utilizing new performance techniques for the purpose of tapping into the creative potential of both the individual and ensemble in order to rediscover oneself in forms of character, action, imagery and text as the basis for creating original performance and theater pieces.
Aside from my roots in experimental modern dance/choreography (Alwin Nikolais/Murray Louis - NYC, CalArts), the histrionics that attracted and eventually lead me to this Process:
Scott Kelman - Protégé of The Living Theatre** , Performer, Teacher, award-winning Director, my collaborator and inspiration in this performance art form for nearly 10 years wrote:
“For the performer to create, he must feel free. As he enters the “space” he is often bound by the idea that he will not be able to do anything. He has lost the awareness that upon entering the “space” he is, by the very nature of things, already doing something. As simplistic as this seems, it remains the major obstacle between the performer and his ability to create. The performer must see what he IS doing rather than what he is not, since what he is not doing does not really exist.”
** The Living Theatre - theatrical landmark in NYC - founded in 1947 as an imaginative alternative to the commercial theater by Judith Malina, the German-born student of Erwin Piscator, and Julian Beck, an abstract expressionist painter of the New York School. Students of this work use skills that build ensemble communication, various techniques for vocal expression, stage movement and text development, and interaction with audience, breaking the fourth wall.
The late Scott Kelman brought his own evolvement of this work to Los Angeles (where we met) directing and garnering award-winning performance pieces...gathering a following of actors, poets, painters, models, musicians, set designers, dancers, singers....any and all kinds of artists and performers who wanted to connect to a more in depth creative awareness of self...& beyond.
My mission as a Teacher, Coach, Mentor and regarding this work: “To guide, encourage and elevate creative minds through mindful focus and fearless curiosity.”
“OUT OF BOUNDS” begins here... and in the PROCESS will explore...
- Collaborating in ensemble by working off others through yielding with strength (empathy)
- Improvisational development through the integration of body and mindfulness
- Realizing creative potential through the practice and use of seeing and hearing
- Generating creative impulses through movement and body awareness
- Getting to spontaneity by being in the moment
- Attaining and discovering character, action and imagery through the use of the body
- Creating text through the use of energy and rhythm
- Projecting words and images through the embodiment of them
- Getting to and projecting energy
- Attaining joy as the basic performing experience
L.A. Times’ performance review:
“...for anyone hungering for artistic integrity, vitality, and a touch of the bizarre.”
